My successes.

The Clarks successfully opened S&R Sharpening in 2012. They designed a website and created a marketing plan to help reach new customers.

What inspired you to start your business?

When Scott and Ruth Clark decided to leave their traditional careers and strike out on their own, they turned their attention to the tools they used for grooming their dogs. There was no way to sharpen them, the Clarks realized, so they decided to fill that need by starting a mobile workshop sharpening scissors, knives, tools, and machine blades.

The Clarks outfitted the back of a van as their sharpening workshop and opened a drop-off location. They now provide sharpening services to individuals and businesses near Largo, Florida.

How SCORE helped.

Having never started a business before, the Clarks turned to SCORE for help as they prepared to launch. The Clarks attended several in-person and online SCORE workshops on marketing and accounting. Working with SCORE mentors Keith Knowles and Mats Benning, they did market research, created a business plan, and learned how to track their finances. The Clarks say, “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and the SCORE mentors are there to help you prioritize and build your business from the ground up.”
